Install ubuntu 22.04 LTS

Introduction

It has been a year since Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Jammy Jellyfish was released, and I decided to switch from my previous 20.04 to 22.04, thinking that I would be able to get used to the various software and other features.

I installed ubuntu 22.04 Japanese Remix on several workstations so that I can use Japanese easily. I have gotten a bit stuck trying to install ubuntu 22.04 on a NVIDIA GPU-equipped workstation, so here is the situation and how I responded.

Environment

I installed Ubuntu Desktop Japanese Remix (Ubuntu 22.04 LTS) on the following workstations.

  • Hewlet-Packard HP Z820 Workstaion
  • Memory: 96.0 GiB
  • Intel Xeon(R) CPU E5-2643 3.30GHz
  • Quadro K2000 / NVIDIA TITAN V (display connected via kvm switch with Quadro K2000)
  • Disk / SSD: 500GB

Procedure and Phenomenon

I proceeded to install ubuntu as follows.

  1. write the iso file of Ubuntu 22.04 Japanese Remix to USB (boot USB creation).
  2. boot from USB in BIOS settings. In my environment, I turned on the power and selected USB from the Boot Entry menu with F9.
  3. When ubuntu starts up, click “Install Ubuntu” to start installation.
  4. Select the keyboard layout. In my environment, I use the English layout of the Happy Hacking Keyboard (HHK), so I selected English/US.
  5. Under Update and other software, I selected “Install third-party software for graphics and WiFi hardware and additional media formats”.
  6. For the installation type, select “Remove disk and install Ubuntu” because I wanted a clean install.
  7. Enter the appropriate time zone, computer name, and user name/password.
  8. After a short wait, “Installation is complete.” Click “Reboot now,” unplug the USB, and wait for the reboot.

After rebooting in step 8, ubuntu does not start up. The message appears as if it is starting up until halfway through, but when the screen is about to be switched, the screen display disappears and remains as it is.

In Ubuntu 20.04, the same procedure can be installed without any problem at all.

Response

I imagined from the phenomenon that it might be related to gpu drivers, so I did not select “Install graphics and WiFi hardware and third-party software for additional media formats” in step 5. In other words, I did not install nvidia-driver during installation.

Result

After the reboot in step 8, ubuntu 22.04 was launched from the disk (SSD).

As for the NVIDIA driver, I installed nvidia-driver-470, the version used in 20.04, after ubuntu was booted.

$ sudo apt install nvidia-driver-470

After this, I rebooted and NVIDIA GPUs are now available. nvidia-smi and NVIDIA Settings in the GUI provide information about GPUs.

Supplemental - About display resolution

In this article, we previously summarized changing the display resolution.

The above article described that the Device section was changed after xorg.conf was generated in “NVIDIA X Server Settings”. In 22.04, the app name was changed to “NVIDIA Settings” and when I tried to generate xorg.conf in “X Server Display Configuration”, I got an error message saying that it could not be written and could not generate the file.

I copied xorg.conf and 1920x1080.bin from 20.04 and used them.

I wonder if this is related to the Wayland support for display servers?

Regarding the display resolution, the above changes are necessary because of the VGA to HDMI conversion adapter, which may be why.
